A root canal is a dental procedure used to treat a damaged or infected tooth. Some think that a root canal is a complicated procedure that requires a lengthy recovery.

Dr. Natalie Tung, MD, DDS, at Arcadia Medi-Dental Group in Arcadia, California, is experienced in performing root canals and ensuring patients recover fast following this procedure. Keep reading to learn more about the timeline of a root canal.

What Is a Root Canal?

When the inner part of your tooth is damaged or infected, it can cause severe pain and other serious complications.

Through a root canal procedure, the dentist removes the infected pulp, replaces it with an inert substance, and then seals the tooth. Root canals are straightforward dental procedures that can be done quickly and conveniently.

Root canal treatments can be performed by a dentist or an endodontist. An endodontist is more specialized in performing root canals.

When Do You Need a Root Canal?

If you have any of the symptoms mentioned below, you need to visit your dentist. Your dentist will assess your oral health and decide if you need a root canal.

You may require a root canal treatment if you experience:

  • Pain or pressure on your gums while chewing
  • Tooth sensitivity to cold and hot foods
  • An infection in one of your teeth
  • An abscess
  • Severe pain
  • Swollen gums

How Long Does It Take for the Root Canal To Recover?

Root canal treatments have improved a lot in recent years.

Before the procedure, the dentist will administer local anesthesia to make sure that you feel comfortable and you don’t feel any pain.

After the treatment, you may feel some numbness in your teeth and gums for at least 2-4 hours due to the use of local anesthesia.

As soon as the local anesthesia begins to wear off, you may feel some pain and discomfort, soreness, or sensitivity. To prevent discomfort, the dentist will prescribe over-the-counter pain medications.

In most cases, you will recover from a root canal procedure in a few days.
